EBSD Education

There are many opportunities for study design training and educational opportunities through the EBSD Core. Need to brush up on biostatistics basics? Looking for educational resources for trainees in your lab? Longing to feel more confident about sample size and power calculations for your grants? Wishing online resources would be directly relevant to your research? View the short educational videos expressly for musculoskeletal researchers.

Created and recorded by CCMBM member Dr. Janet Chiang, these videos use examples from musculoskeletal hypotheses and experiments just like yours!

EBSD Core Workshop: Gene Expression Analysis of Musculoskeletal Traits

In this workshop, participants will learn about concepts involved in the analysis of transcriptome-wide gene expression data generated by RNA sequencing. Concepts and methods to be covered include:

Data format and organization
Data quality control
Experimental design
Differential expression analysis
Graphical display of results
Gene set enrichment analysis

Laboratory methods for generation of gene expression data will not be covered. Participants can apply these concepts to gene expression studies of human and non-human samples. We will highlight the use of gene expression data from the Study of Muscle, Mobility, and Aging (SOMMA).

This workshop was presented by:

Dan Evans, PhD, MPH
Co-Director, CCMBM EBSD Core
Senior Scientist, California Pacific Medical center Research Institute
Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UCSF

Recorded on June 18, 2025.

Continuing Medical Education: Osteoporosis

UCSF CME 20th Annual Osteoporosis: New Insights in Research, Diagnosis, and Clinical Care 2023
This course will focus on updates and hot topics in osteoporosis, with an all-star faculty including experts here at UCSF as well other visiting faculty. The CCMBM EBSD Core is subsidizing the registration cost of CCMBM members: Trainees (students, residents, fellows) are fully subsidized, and faculty members are subsidized at 50%. Please contact Lucy Wu for registration details.
